The foundation of the project is to develop REal-Time
Audio-VIdeo Conversion for multimedia database servers that could work in
real-time environment (RTE) in order to provide a
specific quality-of-service.
It is desirable to have very fast and real-time conversion that can
support many clients and can be data independent, in such a way that the
format of served audio-video streams can be prepared on-the-fly depending on
client desires for specific characteristics
imposed also by the client's resources (i.e. available equipment or network connection or owned applications).
Six general aims can be distinguished in RETAVIC:
recognition and characterization of existing MMDB servers
AV formats classification and MVOs (multimedia virtual objects) description
recognition and classification of currently
available converters of AV streams
design and implementation of converters that will work in real-time environment and will have QoS-support
performance evaluation in RTE (benchmarking, complex modeling and eventually reimplementation)
possible cooperation with client-side media players (API specification)
