Data Warehousing
Content
The data warehouse is still a hot topic as well from the theoretical point of view of database research as from the commercial point of view. The vast number of subtopics makes it necessary to investigate the data warehouse from different perspectives. The focus of this lecture is laid on an end-user business perspective, along with the appropriate data models and the process of query evaluation. Further, implementation techniques like ROLAP and MOLAP, the selection, use and maintenance of aggregates are discussed. Also more exotic topics like data mining or security and access rights management are dealt with. The lecture offers a mixture of theoretical foundations, examples from the business world and current research results. To further clarify the benefits of a data warehouse, several sessions of the lecture are given by practicioners from companies explaining their experiences from building a data warehouse.
